“WISH” is a female (intact) English Golden Retriever imported from the US with lots of European Champions in her pedigree. The UK breed standard is very similar to Canada and the US but dogs tend to be a bit smaller in height with bigger build/stature and gorgeous blocky heads. Look at her bone in her pics. She is AKC + CKC registered. She has a full genetic panel CLEAR for Golden Retriever. She is OFA certified for eyes and heart. However, she did not get a passing grade on her hips and elbows. Wish will be 3yrs old this August but my plans to breed (after 8yrs of searching for the perfect male + female) have come to a halt. She is completely healthy with NO mobility issues. I have been told to get xrays repeated at a different vet as this may change everything, but I just have to stop and cut my losses in this venture.
Wish is sweet and very affectionate. She is great with other dogs and people. She is house, crate and car trained. She is reactive on leash. I cannot work on this living out in the country.
I am not in a rush. The right home is a must. I love this dog tremendously. She would make a great guard/alert dog for any home. She has much respect for bark collars. They work great.
Serious inquiries only. Negative comments will be deleted. You have no idea how long I have struggled with this decision
We welcomed our first English Goldens to Saddleup in 2020. They were sisters Wish and Winnie. Unfortunately, Winnie did not pass our standards for breeding to remain in the program.
This endeavour has been many years in the making. So much planning and searching for the right breeder and the right dogs. I seek dogs who are properly tested, raised, with emphasis on health, temperament and conformation.
English Goldens aka EUROPEAN GOLDENS are slightly different than the American and Canadian breeds. Yes, all goldens originated from Scotland but each country breeds to a slightly different breed standard. I will explain this below.
Not all English Goldens are so light coloured. My dogs are often referred to as ENGLISH CREAM GOLDENS. Many breeders hate this term as they are all GOLDENS but I am indifferent. WISH is a descendant of European Champions. LEGEND also has Cdn champions in his pedigree.

Legend is an absolute sweetheart. So laid back and calm. Extremely gentle and great with my Mini American puppy litters. Incredibly soft, thick coat.
Can't wait to see what he produces.
The English Golden on the right (UKC- United Kennel Club), American on the left (AKC- American Kennel Club), and the Canadian (CKC- Cdn Kennel Club).
I need to find a better picture. The English Golden has bigger, more round eyes unlike the pic above.
Each Kennel club breeds to slightly different standards but all Golden Retrievers originated from Scotland.
It is important to go to the Club sites and read the breed standard.
The English breeding std is slightly stockier and bigger boned, but they also have a slightly larger head. Which means that they have a stronger, thicker, and more muscular neck to carry it. They also have slightly wider muzzles, which result in a stronger jaw. Their eyes are positioned closer together, and they tend to be rounder. Their ears are level with their eyes, compared to the American Goldens whose ears are set higher and further back.
His topline is level giving them a stockier appearance whereas the American has a more sloped topline.
THe above pic doesn't really show these differences well. Will seek a better comparison.
English Goldens are very light coloured (not WHITE). Hence, many refer to them as English Cream Goldens. Many breeders hate this term but I am not one of them.
However, there is a full range of gold colours in this spectrum.
ALL GOLDEN RETRIEVERS are descendants of Scottish Goldens. The European dogs are called English Goldens simply because the early European Dog Shows were all held in England. You may hear them referred to as European Goldens as well.
The coat of the English Golden is medium-long in length, and it is longer around his ears, neck, and tail. His long hair is known as feathering fur, and this hair is slightly wavier than the rest of his coat. His coat is soft and silky to the touch. He has a double-coat, and he is a moderate shedder all year round, with two heavy shedding seasons.
There is a clear difference between the English Golden and his American or Canadian sibling. English Goldens are calmer and seem more mature compared to the American Goldens. English Creams are rarely hyper or overly boisterous, whereas many American Goldens are.
English Golden Retrievers are super sweet and friendly. Not only with his family but also strangers that he has never met before. Because he is calmer, he is not too in-your-face with strangers compared to American Golden’s. He also loves to play games in the yard, and he is very active. He needs a lot of playtime in between exercise sessions to stimulate his body and mind. Being a working dog from the Scottish Highlands, he likes to spend a lot of time outdoors in the fresh air.
These are my first ENGLISH GOLDENS so i am testing these theories for myself. I used to own Goldens years ago before i started breeding the MAS.

The English breed standard states they should measure between 21 ½ to 24 inches tall, from paw to shoulder. A healthy English Golden should weigh between 55 and 75 pounds. This is the same as the breed standard for the American Golden Retriever.
However, those that work with English Goldens state that despite the breed standard being the same, he is slightly stockier than his American counterparts. And just like any dog breed, males are typically on the larger end of the height and weight scale when compared to females.
Not only are they slightly stockier and bigger boned, but they also have a slightly larger head.
The most noticeable difference in the English Cream Golden Retriever’s appearance (other than his light coat) is that his topline is more level. His topline is the line between his neck and his tail. Whereas the American Golden’s topline is more slanted, a bit like a German Shepherds sloping hips. This gives the English Golden a proud and overall stockier appearance.
* I know the pic above has a sloped topline but he is a champion in Europe.
An English Golden Retriever’s favourite reward is likely to be a tennis ball, or any other object that he can mouth, rather than an edible treat. However, yours could be different, so it’s essential to work with what your dog wants. Using these as a reward in response to good behaviour is known as positive reinforcement training. And this is the most effective training method.
Thankfully, the English Golden Retriever is intelligent and loyal, making him super trainable. This is why he is a favourite therapy dog option. This means that he is suited to a first-time dog owner. Being calmer and more mature is another reason why he is a good option for a novice dog owner.
Crate training is a good idea for your English Golden. Not only will this give him a safe space that he can call his own, but it will also provide you with peace of mind when you have to leave him at home. An unexpected trip to the Emergency vet means your dog must be crated so if not trained, this will add immensely to the stress level and possible removal of your dog from treatment.
The English Golden Retriever is a relatively healthy dog. The five primary health concerns that are:
Hip and elbow dysplasia – this is where the elbow and hip socket doesn’t join properly with the bone. Over time it wears down the ligaments and bone, causing pain and abrasion. This affects most large breed dogs.
Cardiac concerns – there are a few cardiac concerns that affect the breed, but there is one heart disease that is more common than most. Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), is where the heart becomes large, thin, and weak.
Ophthalmologist health – three eye concerns affect the Golden Retriever more than other conditions. These are progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, and Golden Retriever uveitis (GRU). GRU is the most common, and it is where the middle layer of the eye becomes inflamed, and can eventually cause permanent eye loss.
Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis – this is a disease of the central nervous system, and typically they will show signs of loss of coordination, seizures, anxiety, and blindness at 13 months old. For a Golden to inherit this, both of his parents have to have it, which is why it is crucial to work with a reputable breeder who screens their dogs.
Cancer – this is also a big concern of the breed, and it is here where it is beneficial to adopt an English Golden Retriever over an American one. Research has shown that cancer was the cause of over 61% of American Golden Retrievers, compared to over 38% of English Golden Retrievers.
